September 11, 2005 was the first time I was out of my house on September 11th since the terroist attacks in 2001. I had decided a couple of days earlier that I wanted to chronicle this G.O. I thought about the possibility of encountering huge crowds while heading down to that area. The crowd factor never materialized though.
This G.O. featured the downtown 2 making all local stops from Nereid Ave to South Ferry. I also chronciled the second half of this G.O. which had the uptown 2 making all express stops while running on the Lexington Ave. line from Bowling Green to Nereid Ave.
The first half of this G.O. was slow & painful. What made it painful was the fact it ran local all the way down. The delays were minimal in the Bronx. The only one occurred when the doors recycled twice @ Gun Hill Rd. The next delay occurred in Manhattan, when the doors recycled twice at Central Park N./110th St.
The delays continued when we arrived at 96th St. The doors recycled three times & we were subsequently held. The conductor chimed in with an announcement. He announced that this train was now turning into the 1 making all local stops to South Ferry. He also announced that people should stay on this train as there was no express service at the station including no 3 train service. He loudly announced this for everyone waiting on the express side of the platform. I felt he did a great job making the announcements clear & understandable for everyone.
However NYC is filled with morons. The train was packed yet over half the train emptied & went towards the express platform. He yelled that they needed to get back on the train as the station had no express service until Monday morning. The conductor is now starting to sound annoyed at the stupidity being displayed. He made one more loud announcement yet they stayed at the station & even more got off to transfer. I hope none of these morons were teachers or anything else important as far as this world functioning. Eventually the doors closed & we were on our way.
The rest of the ride went without a hiccup. When we arrived at South Ferry, I stayed in my seat & waited for the ride through the loop to Bowling Green. When we got to Bowling Green, I started the chronicle for the journey back uptown which you can find here.
